She Asked for a Sewing Machine, Not a Handout

When we met Rose, she wasn’t looking for pity. She wasn’t looking for a handout. What she wanted was something far more powerful — a way to stand on her own.

A single mother of three, Rose had once worked as a tailor in Nairobi, but after fleeing domestic abuse and returning to her rural home, she found herself with no tools, no capital, and no clients. Still, she had her hands. Still, she had her dream.

“I don’t want you to give me money,” she told us. “I just need a sewing machine. I can do the rest.”

We were moved. And so, we acted.

Through our Women Empowerment Program, Rose received a brand-new machine — her very first asset in years. That very week, she began sewing school uniforms for children in her village. By month’s end, she had ten clients. By the next, she was teaching two young girls how to sew.

Rose didn’t just rebuild her life — she built a ripple effect.

Today, she’s one of our most inspiring mentors, training others through our workshops. Her story is proof that empowerment isn’t charity — it’s restoration.

And all she asked for was a sewing machine.

Imagine what others are waiting to do — with just a little faith and a little help.

You can be part of that answer.
